Life in the fast lane seems to be the norm for most of our civilized world. Why must we strive for more speed? What could we possibly gain by moving at a faster pace? I admit that the rumble of a big block under the hood and the vibration of the shift lever in my right hand brings forth some sort of euphoria. The sight of any of the American muscle cars from my youth make me desire the days of old, when a lead foot and youthful ignorance could allow for speeds that I would never even consider now.
In the wild, there are usually only two reasons for speed, flight or chase. When one’s life hangs in the balance, I would think that speed and stamina would become second nature. I have seen elk scale sheer rock, in a bid to outrun and outdistance predators bent on their demise. From a high ledge in the back country of Montana, I watched a mountain lion try in vane to catch a two day old mountain goat kid, only to be ousted by the mother and nearly fall to his death. One has only to watch the majestic pronghorn antelope race across the landscape at speeds seemingly impossible, to realize that we humans are sloth compared to our animal brethren.
So, maybe our desire to go faster stems from some ancient chase, a race that more than likely we lost at the hands of some far superior opponent in a bid for survival.
I will be thinking of that the next time my wife says I should slow down. What if the race were for survival? Would she or the officer in my rear view mirror understand then? Probably not, but you can be certain that I would run! Like my animal brethren, I would fly like the wind!

I have an award for you on my blog, Freedom of Thought http://sandi-k.blogspot.com/
Keep up the great posts!

Fighting gravity and a body built for thought ... yeah, I'd like to let the wind lift me skyward, and be able to navigate the sky.
Wonderful reflection on our life in the fast lane. My husband is always telling ME to slow down! I tell him I do when its necessary....but until then - I must run with my camera and binoculars until I find what I am looking for - and then I stop to breathe and observe.
Hi Stacey,
I think this is a natural behaviour. life is so short that at some point we have too much to achieve ;-) Maybe it is in our mammals genes, who knows. Better remember what carpe diem means! I guess you follow it quite well when we are nature watchers. I love your last shots, the colours are wonderful.
Mike,
Your words paint a picture that takes me into your world. Thanks.
Stacey,
Your photos are outstanding as always. Thanks.
Susan
Hi Mike
I think this is a classic, "as the story's told the vision unfolds". and every woman in the world tells their menfolk to slow down ( you should hear my wife with our four year old grandson). Still the need for speed is always with us.
Stacey as usual beautifully captured images to go with Mike's words.
Hey Stacy, great post as always.
Sorry I did not get back to you sooner reference the lek. As you know YNP is closed except for the N to NE loop. Since I entered from the N it would have been quite the trip to get to your side. Maybe the next go round.
Blue Skies.
Maybe we go fast so that when we do slow down, all our worries are behind us and we truly are free. But sadly some forget to slow down at all....
Great pictures! I love the background in the first one!!!
I think the further we (humans) remove ourselves from nature, the harder we run...

Stacey/Hawk: How I remember when I first saw an antelope in Wyoming. It is a magnificent animal.
Hawk has a way of stirring memories for us fifty plus folks. I grew up near a drag strip and I love the smell and sound of speed. If by chance some big engine pulls up near my silver bullet, I roll down the windows, close my eyes and go back in time just like his words made me feel today. Stacey, I got a new toy for Mothers Day and posted the first photos of Red Breasted Grosbeaks I took with it. I would love for you to come and click the photos to enlarge them and give me some advise on how to capture wildlife best. Peace
Nice little dialogue, and Stacey, your photos are outstanding as always. Thanks for sharing.
Super, and these snippets from your husband's writing are wonderful...
And yep, I'd be the one saying "slow down"...
speed. something both my husband and I like. For me, there is nothing better to be on a horse galloping across the meadow at near top speed, wind in my face, feeling the strength beneath me, what a rush, for my hubby, he likes his speed under the hood, not on the hoof. He likes to wind up his beast and roar down the road, and listen to those gears and feel the power under the hood. We get along just great when it comes to speed in our own elements.
Just spectacular. That ore stripe reminds me of one along the Yellowstone River. They call it the Devil's Slide.... Oh how I miss being there.
Maybe the fall-out of the state our world is in will be people slowing down a bit...I doubt it, though.
This world of ours is so very beautiful and the two of you are so good at letting us see that.
always beautiful work.... love them both
I had an idea to add some outside views on the enviroment. I like your blog a lot and would like to extend an invite to be a guest author on my blog. No offense if you decide no, but I thought it would worth a mention. Take a look and let me know. Thanks for your time.

I love speed and keep preparing myself for it all the time in the wild. Wildlife action (survival, chase, hunt) happens in a fraction of a second and if you missed it, that moment's gone forever.
You have applied this beautifully to our lives, I agree with one of the comments saying we go fast so that when we slow down we can take out time. Like most of us, I too love fast cars.
Outstanding Blog, excellent Images.
John.
amazing - unbelievable work.... wow
...interesting post. Loved the narration...so true (hadn't though of speed stemming from survival). I now work at being still and just observing (I guess that's part of survival too, we have to see what's coming if we're going to out run it!)
Hey, you have a great blog here! I'm definitely going to bookmark you!

I love how you appeared on my blog. I don't know you, and yet, now I do. I am new at this so thank you for sharing your beautiful pictures as well as your thoughtful descriptions and oh, yes, the music!
